Widespread Panic debuted the Allman Brothers Band’s “Come and Go Blues” with Chuck Leavell and Randall Bramblett during Saturday’s Mempho Music Festival performance in Memphis. The guest-filled show, the sextet’s first of two nights at Mempho, also featured the return of Bramblett’s “Get In Get Out” for the first time since New Year’s Eve 2003 and an Ivan Neville sit-in on Funkadelic’s “Red Hot Mama.”
Panic kicked things into gear with an “Ain’t Life Grand” opener followed by one of several Bloodkin songs the band covers, “Henry Parsons Died.” The first frame also included favorites such as “Walkin’ (For Your Love),” “Tall Boy” and “Space Wrangler.”
Ivan Neville — whose band Dumpstaphunk was also on the bill at Mempho — clocked the first assist of the evening, emerging to help the band on their interpretation of Funkadelic’s “Red Hot Mama.” The renowned New Orleans musician joined WSP’s JoJo Hermann in keyboard land.
Panic kept the guest spots coming to open the second set, bringing out The Allman Brothers Band and Gregg Allman collaborators Chuck Leavell and Randall Bramblett. Leavell played keys with ABB in the 1970s and is currently the touring keyboardist/musical director with The Rolling Stones. Leavell joined the Randall Bramblett Band at Mempho.
Bramblett also played with Leavell in the Allman spinoff band Sea Level and performed/recorded with Gregg Allman. Additionally, Bramblett has collaborated extensively with Widespread Panic, touring with the band in the early 2000s and making numerous guest appearances.
With the Allman vets in place, WSP delivered a first time play of the Allman Brothers Band classic “Come and Go Blues.” The song appeared on Brothers and Sisters, the 1973 album that introduced Leavell to ABB’s recording lineup. Next, the collab delivered a song from another band on Bramblett’s CV, Traffic, with a rendition of their excellent song, “Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys.” Both tunes featured Chuck on keys and Randall on saxophone.
Following “Low Spark,” Bramblett headed to keyboard world to help Panic perform his “Get in Get Out,” a song WSP last played on New Year’s Eve 2003. Widespread Panic then went it alone to wrap up the second set with additional favorites such as “Barstools and Dreamers” and “Driving Song.”
The set came to a close with the band’s pairing of “Protein Drink” and “Sewing Machine.” Panic offered an altered arrangement of their rowdy classic “Chilly Water” to wrap their Saturday night at Mempho.
