On Wednesday evening, Redditor Far-Feedback-6437 shared on the r/sturgillsimpson subreddit a post entitled “Detroit show manifestation” in advance of Sturgill Simpson’s Johnny Blue Skies & The Dark Clouds concert at Little Caesars Arena on Saturday, which included the below request [sic]:
Detroit show on Saturday Stu plays sound and fury in its entirety flowed by the full mutiny after midnight album.
Simpson and The Dark Clouds – bassist Kevin Black, keyboardist/saxophonist Robbie Crowell, guitarist Laur Joamets and drummer Miles Miller – are on the Mutiny For The Masses Tour in support of their aforementioned new studio album, Mutiny After Midnight. The tour has seen setlists pulling heavily from that record and the previous Johnny Blue Skies album, 2024’s Passage Du Desir.
The band has also relied extensively on the rock-oriented Sound & Fury album, which arrived in 2019 and doubled as the soundtrack to an animated feature film. Simpson revived the Sound & Fury song “Last Man Standing” for its first Johnny Blue Skies setlist appearance in St. Paul, Minnesota. Simpson relayed the story of recording Sound & Fury not far from Detroit at McGuire Motor Inn in Waterford, Michigan.
“Last Man Standing” and the other nine songs on Sound & Fury were performed in sequential order to start Saturday’s concert in Detroit. The Reddit-based request came into full fruition when the 13 songs making up the extended edition of Mutiny After Midnight, including covers of Eddie Murphy’s “Party All The Time” and the deluxe album-closing “A Whiter Shade Of Pale” by Procol Harum, followed in the same order as the record.
The back-to-back full album rollout was trailed by a pair of songs from Simpson’s 2014 album, Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, “Life of Sin” and “Turtles All the Way Down.” A cover of “Long White Line” came ahead of the closing “Call To Arms,” which encapsulated a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Machine Gun.”
