Indigo Girls paired a full-show banjo collaboration with Alison Brown and guest-filled versions of “Deportee,” “What’s Up?” and “Closer To Fine” at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium on Wednesday. Margo Price and tourmate Linda Perry joined the duo during the September 30 concert.
Amy Ray and Emily Saliers opened with “Shit Kickin’” and worked through such favorites as “Shame On You,” “Hammer And A Nail” and “Power Of Two.” Brown accompanied Indigo Girls on banjo throughout the evening.
Price joined the duo midway through the main set for “Deportee (Plane Wreck At Los Gatos).” Woody Guthrie wrote the words in response to a 1948 plane crash that killed 28 Mexican farmworkers whose names were omitted from news coverage. Martin Hoffman later supplied the melody for the protest song, which challenged the reduction of the victims’ identities to their deportation status. Price recorded a cover of “Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos)” with Joan Baez for her recently released Days Of Unrest mixtape.
Ray followed “Yield” with a solo acoustic rendition of Dire Straits’ “Romeo And Juliet.” Lucy Wainwright Roche also performed her own “Heroin” solo acoustic. Ray’s “Joy Train” and Indigo Girls staples “Get Out The Map,” “Chickenman” and “Galileo” rounded out the main set.

Perry and Price joined Indigo Girls for the two-song encore. First came “What’s Up?,” the 1993 4 Non Blondes hit written by Perry. Both guests remained for the concluding “Closer To Fine,” with the Ryman audience singing along.
