Frank Zappa’s original double-album version of Zoot Allures will be released for the first time as part of a 50th anniversary reissue arriving December 4 via Zappa Records/UMe. The expanded editions include the previously unreleased Night Of The Iron Sausage alongside a complete 1976 Paris concert, studio outtakes and other recordings from Zappa’s vault.

Produced by Zappa Vaultmeister Joe Travers, the Super Deluxe Edition spans five CDs and a Blu-ray Audio disc. The 61-track collection pairs a newly remastered version of the original nine-track album with more than five hours of additional audio. A single edit of the previously unreleased “Son Of Canard Du Jour,” featuring bass newly recorded by Arthur Barrow in 2026, is out today.

Before settling on the single-LP Zoot Allures, Zappa assembled an 11-track double album under the working title Night Of The Iron Sausage. Travers and the archival team reconstructed that sequence using hand-cut acetate reference discs from 1976, a surviving tape of side four and corresponding early mixes preserved in the vault.

The restored double album opens with an early mix of “Disco Boy” and includes “Sleep Dirt,” “The Ocean Is The Ultimate Solution” and “Filthy Habits,” which were omitted from the finished Zoot Allures. Alternate mixes and edits of “Ms. Pinky,” “Black Napkins” and “The Torture Never Stops” offer further glimpses of the project before Zappa reshaped it.

Two CDs document Zappa’s March 8, 1976 concert in Paris. The previously unreleased recording captures his short-lived five-piece band with Napoleon Murphy Brock on saxophone and vocals, Andre Lewis on keyboards and vocals, Roy Estrada on bass and vocals and Terry Bozzio on drums and vocals. The set includes extended performances of “Black Napkins,” “Advance Romance,” “Chunga’s Revenge” and “Zoot Allures,” as well as “Filthy Habits,” “Muffin Man,” “I’m The Slime” and more.

Engineer Davy Moire recorded the Paris show in stereo. His tapes supply the complete concert apart from a brief patch at the start of the encore drawn from Zappa’s own Nagra recording.

Additional material includes an unreleased studio outtake of “Zoot Allures,” the nine-minute instrumental jam “Muff Diver” with Denny Walley on slide guitar and alternate versions of several album tracks. The “Hofstra Segment” presents dressing-room recordings Zappa incorporated into “Friendly Little Finger.” Vintage radio ads and mono DJ singles also appear in the collection.

Recorded primarily at The Record Plant in Los Angeles, Zoot Allures found Zappa handling guitars, bass, keyboards, synthesizers and vocals, with Bozzio serving as his main collaborator. The album brought together “Black Napkins,” the title track, “The Torture Never Stops” and “Disco Boy,” with contributions from musicians including Ruth Underwood and .

The Blu-ray presents the original album and three bonus tracks in new Dolby Atmos and 5.1 surround mixes by Karma Auger and Erich Gobel at Studio1LA, along with high-resolution stereo audio. An expanded booklet features archival photography and essays by Travers, journalist Jason Pettigrew and original album engineer Michael Braunstein.

Vinyl options center on Night Of The Iron Sausage, available as a 180-gram black vinyl two-LP set. A three-LP edition adds box-set highlights, a lithograph and an expanded booklet. The full 61-track collection will also be available digitally. Pre-order Zoot Allures (50th Anniversary Edition).
