Weezer announced they will release their self-titled 20th album on August 21 through Reprise/Warner Records. The band previewed the 10-track collection, nicknamed The Gold Album due to the color of its cover art, by unveiling “We Might As Well Be Strangers,” a single recorded in collaboration with Wednesday vocalist Karly Hartzman.
The members of the group gathered at an Orange County rehearsal space to begin work on the LP after completing their 30th anniversary tour. Weezer was birthed out of those sessions, complete with tracks written by three of the band’s four members. When Weezer entered the studio they recruited Klas Ahlund and Kenneth Blume (FKA Kenny Beats) to co-produce the record.
Press materials revealed that there is “no grid, no click track, no pitch correction” on the forthcoming album, adding that “drums were recorded with all four playing live, listening to each other and still re-shaping the songs.” The result is said to be a “tightly-wound, ready-to-spring record.”
In April, Weezer shared “Shine Again” their first new song in four years. Now, the band looks forward to their first full-length effort since 2021’s Van Weezer with “We Might As Well Be Strangers.”
“We Might As Well Be Strangers” is a hard-hitting track playing into Weezer’s strengths. Hartzman splits verses with frontman Rivers Cuomo before their two voices intertwine on the choruses.
