Susan Tedeschi Celebrates Berklee Homecoming With Derek Trucks

Susan Tedeschi returned to her alma mater on Saturday, headlining Berklee College of Music’s inaugural Homecoming Block Party in Boston. Derek Trucks, Tedeschi’s husband and Tedeschi Trucks Band co-leader, joined her for four songs during the set held days after Berklee announced a scholarship in the singer, guitarist and 1991 graduate’s name.

Tedeschi was backed by keyboardist Dennis Montgomery, bassist Ted Pecchio, guitarist Oliver Wood and drummer Tyler “Falcon” Greenwell. Trucks emerged midway through the performance for “What in the World,” “Hero,” the title track to Tedeschi’s 1998 solo album Just Won’t Burn and “Little by Little.”

The 16-song set began with “Got My Mojo Working” and included the Elmore James-associated blues standard “Outside Woman Blues,” Bob Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” and a pairing of John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery” with the Grateful Dead’s “Sugaree.” Tedeschi then closed the performance with “The Feeling Music Brings.”

Berklee created the Susan Tedeschi Scholarship for a student with demonstrated financial need. The Boston-area native studied at the college before graduating in 1991, then formed her first band in the city and developed the sound that carried into Just Won’t Burn and her subsequent work with Tedeschi Trucks Band.
