Following an appearance at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, My Morning Jacket launched a seven-show residency at The Fillmore in San Francisco on Saturday. Night one saw MMJ welcoming the Bay Area’s own Molly Tuttle for Grateful Dead, Dolly Parton and Sly & the Family Stone covers.
The concert got underway with Tuttle on guitar for a rendition of the Grateful Dead’s “Sugaree.” Molly hails from Palo Alto, California where the Grateful Dead formed in 1965.
“Sugaree” originally appears on Jerry Garcia‘s 1972 self-titled debut album but already existed in the Dead’s live catalog before it was released. The Tuttle/My Morning Jacket team-up on “Sugaree” in San Francisco marked a first time play of the tune for MMJ.
My Morning Jacket’s Fillmore residency kickoff also saw the band performing favorites such as “Holdin On To Black Metal” and “Touch Me I’m Going to Scream Pt. 2.” Following the latter, Molly reemerged to help MMJ out on a cover of “Everyday People,” from another legendary San Francisco band, Sly & The Family Stone.
MMJ wrapped up their main set with the staple “Mahgeetah.” The rockers launched the four-song encore with a rarity, “Hillside Song,” performed just eight times since its debut in 2015. Molly’s final sit-in of the evening followed, an acoustic duet with My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James on Dolly Parton’s “Eagle When She Flies.”
“We’re gonna pay tribute to one of the all-time greats who we lost recently,” James said ahead of the Parton cover. “We miss her very much, Miss Dolly Parton.”
