Steve Earle was honored on Thursday at The Masonic in San Francisco, where Emmylou Harris, Jackson Browne, Joan Baez and a long list of other friends and collaborators performed his songs. The benefit concert, An Evening Honoring Steve Earle, took place the night before Hardly Strictly Bluegrass began.
Earle has performed at every edition of Hardly Strictly Bluegrass since 2002, and the free festival returned to Golden Gate Park starting today (Friday, October 2). Buddy Miller was the evening’s musical director, with Reckless Kelly and Greg Leisz augmenting the performances.
The lineup of performers also included Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, Peter Rowan, Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams, Hot Tuna, Molly Tuttle, Elizabeth Cook,Victoria Williams, Lukas Nelson, Shawn Camp, Peter Case, Steve Earle and The Dukes and Stacey Earle, among others. Across two sets, the guests played songs from throughout Earle’s career. Earle himself came out to perform at the end of the night.
The benefit supported Sweetwater Spectrum, a nonprofit that provides long-term housing for adults with autism or similar developmental disabilities. Watch video of Rowan, Welch, and Rawlings taking up “The Devil’s Right Hand” and “My Old Friend The Blues,” from the show below:
