Phish’s Trey Anastasio Makes Surprise Appearance At Marc Maron & Friends Divided Sky Foundation Benefit

Sarah Silverman, Nick Kroll and John Mulaney were also part of the event at Largo in Los Angeles.

Fans who attended the Marc Maron & Friends Divided Sky Foundation benefit show last night at the Largo at Coronet in Los Angeles, were treated to more than just a star-studded lineup of comedians: a surprise performance from Trey Anastasio.

Largo has long been a club where some of the best comedians in the world will pop in to their friends shows and try material that may or may not make it to their next taped special, making it a room perfect for improvisation, riffing and giving the audience a “once in a lifetime” type of experience.

This is exactly how the night would shake out.

Marc Maron opened the show greeting guests and quickly bringing out the special guest everyone was hoping would attend, Trey Anastasio. Beginning his set with “Sample In A Jar” he seamlessly moved into what he called his crowd-tester, “Limb By Limb” with the crowd passing the test and jumping in to carry the “and I am taken far away” lyric.

Trey let the crowd know while he was excited to be performing at a comedy club with great comedians, he wouldn’t be adding to the jokes for the evening.

“I tried to think of a joke all day” Trey told the audience, “I couldn’t think of one.”

Instead he gave us a rendition of his original “Lost In The Pack,” followed by a slinky “Wolfman’s Brother,” and then a “Bathtub Gin” that the crowd leaned all the way into in terms of interactions, specifically when it came to their willingness to take a bath.

The highlight stretch for any sandwich fan came with the “Chalk Dust Torture” that slipped into “Back On The Train” and back again into “CDT,” creating a miniature jam suite that was as expansive as the 25 minute set called for. He closed with “More” leaving the crowd in a state that Marc Maron would return to describe perfectly.

“I’m now vibrating with love and light,” Maron said as he took the stage. Then, acknowledging the uphill task facing the comedians after Anastasio’s set he remarked, “Trey should have been last, now you’ll all have to reel it in and listen to people talk about their problems.”

Comedy legend, Sarah Silverman, followed with a classically unfiltered set, including a story about her boyfriend Rory and their relationship around getting into bed at the end of the night. She delivered an absurd set and took the audience to gross places with glee.

Nick Kroll, an all-time favorite comic of mine, would follow Silverman with a hilarious set, mentioning how his buddies from high school would be so excited for him that he was performing on the same lineup as Trey. He led us in a prayer that leveled the room and had a Sam Elliott impression that even he was impressed by.

Maron returned to weave the show together and deliver a crowd-pleasing set of his own, at one point interacting with Kroll, who could be seen standing just offstage, in an off-the-cuff exchange that only happens in the loose, collaborative nature of an event like this, in a club like this.

One of the best comedians working today, John Mulaney, closed out the show, opening his set with a reflection that while Anastasio “played the hits,” he himself took bad photos on his phone of the show instead of being present. He added that he will absolutely be telling people he was “in the moment” when he tells people about the show.

It was a fitting sentiment for an evening that felt dream-like. In a club that doesn’t allow phones to be out, and a room as intimate as Largo, with performers of that caliber and a cause rooted in recovery and connection, the night carried a weight well beyond the world-class entertainment that the patrons enjoyed.

The Divided Sky Foundation’s mission to support addiction recovery was never added in a heavy handed way to the foreground of the show. VIP patrons were greeted by Andy Bernstein and the hosting members of the Divided Sky Foundation, but the mission of the evening didn’t need to be overstated.

It was present in the generosity of the performers and their willingness to share about their own sobriety, the intimacy of the setting and closeness with these titans showbiz, and the shared experience of a crowd that got the treat of a lifetime.
