FEATURED FAN MOMENT: GREG MARTENS’ JOURNEY TO MEET THE MOLOTOVS IN PARIS
Every once in a while, a fan story comes along that perfectly captures the kind of grassroots energy that The Molotovs live for. This one comes from longtime music lover, and Hall of Fans Founder, Greg Martens, @Tens , who discovered the band online and ended up flying to meet the band in person.
Below is Greg’s full story — recorded using the Record Your Story tool inside his Hall of Fans Museum Wing — along with photos from his hangouts with the band and a video clip that first caught his attention.
AUDIO TRANSCRIPT (as recorded by Greg):
“Hey everybody, this is my story about meeting the band, The Molotovs from the United Kingdom.
One day, a video came across my Facebook, and they were playing in the street in London, doing Day Tripper. It’s a three piece. And I was like, man, these guys are really good. They’re playing the street. They’re after my own heart. I love the gorilla marketing.
About a week later, another video came across Facebook, and they were playing again in the street on the back of a flatbed truck outside of a brewery. And I was like, these guys are good. You know? They play in the street.
About two weeks later, another video came across, and they’re playing at Royal Albert Hall. And if you know anything about music venues in the world, it’s royal, it’s Albert, and it’s a hall. It’s pretty beautiful. So I said, Wow, not only does this band play in the street, but somehow they’re a part of a benefit at Royal Albert Hall.
And then maybe a couple weeks later, they said they were going to Paris. They’d never been to Paris, and I said, I’ve been to Paris a couple times, but haven’t been in 20 years. So I’m going to get on a plane and fly over and introduce myself to the Molotovs. And it’s pretty much exactly what happened.
I walked up to the front door of the venue at four o’clock with a backpack full of T shirts I wanted to give the band, and the guy working the door, said to me, are you with the band? I said, No. He said, Well, they’re upstairs, so next thing you know, I’m there for in the afternoon, the band’s not even set up on stage, and I’m getting to talk to them.
And they’re really young. They’re teenagers, and I need young music and young vibes around me right now. And actually, when I met them in Paris, they just found out that a single on their first album had gone to number one in the charts in UK.
Now they’ve got like three number one singles on this album, and I’m going to fly to see them in Barcelona next week. I’m going to tell the band, as long as they keep playing countries and cities I’ve never been chances are I’ll be there.”
GREG’S UPDATE:
Greg really did follow through — he’s flying out to Spain this week to catch The Molotovs’ show at Sala Upload (Barcelona) as part of the band’s Spain Tour.
