Tributes to Bob Weir have come pouring into social media from all corners of the music world following the news that the Grateful Dead co-founding guitarist died at age 78 after a battle with cancer and lung issues. Weir has been honored by former bandmates, frequent collaborators, fellow music icons, contemporaries and some of those he inspired.
Drummer Mickey Hart, Bobby’s longtime Grateful Dead and Dead & Company bandmate, shared an emotional post about his “little brother” along with photos that “show the bookends of [their] lives together:
Bobby’s fellow GD co-founder, drummer Bill Kreutzmann, also shared a moving tribute to Weir. “There are so many people who can rightfully say that their life would not have been the same without Bob Weir. That’s been true for me since I was 17. And through it all, the high times and the low tides, my love for him will not, indeed can not, fade away,” Kreutzmann wrote. View the full remembrance below:
Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux penned a poignant tribute to Weir on the band’s official social media feeds. “A guitar player unlike any other, and a songwriter who created some of the most interesting, exciting, and oddly-timed songs in rock history, Bobby was also the unabashed rock star in the Grateful Dead,” Lemieux wrote as part of the post. Here’s the complete statement:
Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio, who performed with Weir in various settings, including at Bobby’s last concert on August 3, 2025, remembered him fondly in a post he shared shortly after Bobby’s death was announced. “Bobby was completely allergic to compliments in the most endearing way. I’d say, ‘Man, that guitar riff you were doing on that song sounded really killer’ and he’d respond, ‘Well, I’m sure I’ll fuck it up next time.’ I loved that about him,” Anastasio recalled. Billy Strings collaborated with Bob Weir frequently over the past four years. The bluegrass phenom was in the middle of recording a new song entitled “Wrestling With An Angel” when he learned Weir had “crossed over.” Strings remembered Weir “was always ready to ‘Kick up a fuss’ He always had boundless time and knowledge to share with everyone and was truly one of the kindest people I’ve ever known. The world is a better place because of him. I’m extremely grateful to have crossed paths with him in this life. Check out the entire heartfelt remembrance below:
