How did you first become a fan of The Grateful Dead?
I have siblings who are a decade older than I am. Since they were born in the 60’s, they had the advantage of being exposed to some of the best music of our time. I remember hearing the Grateful Dead from my brother’s huge speakers that let everyone in the neighborhood know he was listening to the Grateful Dead. In 1985, when the Grateful Dead played in Portland, Maine, at the Cumberland County Civic Center, I remember my mom and I dropping my sister off outside the show. It was pouring rain, so the streets were sprinkled with bright rain ponchos. My sister would go off to see shows. I was only a young kid, so I was unable to join. I was so curious why the Dead drew such an enormous fan base. In middle school, friends had older siblings too that went to Dead shows. My 6th-grade math teacher even called those siblings Deadheads. He talked about them as if they were a cult. My Freshman year in high school was the year “In the Dark” came out. It got huge radio play. Our local radio station, WBLM, aired live Dead shows, and I used to listen to them and record them on my tape deck. In the early Fall of 1989 (9-13-1989), I saw Jerry Garcia play at the Seashore Performing…

How did you first become a fan of The Grateful Dead?
Every fan remembers the moment it all began — the instant that spark turned into a real connection and your fandom took hold. We’d love to hear your story.
What first pulled you in?
A Specific Song Or Album – Something you heard once and couldn’t stop replaying?
A Live Show – A concert, festival set, or surprise appearance that blew your mind.
A Performance Clip – A street performance, TV appearance, YouTube/Instagram/TikTok clip, or bootleg video that made you look them up.
A Friend Or Family Connection – A parent’s record collection, a sibling’s playlist, a friend’s burned CD, a partner’s favorite band.
When you share your story, feel free to include:
Where You Were – City, venue, living room, car, headphones on the bus…
Who You Were With – Friends, family, a crowd of strangers, or completely on your own.
What You Remember Most – A specific song, a solo, a lyric, a visual moment, or just the feeling you had.
These are exactly the kinds of fan memories we want to celebrate and preserve here in the Hall of Fans, so don’t hold back. If you’ve got photos, ticket stubs, or playlists connected to your story, feel free to mention those too and add them to your Museum Wing.

The Grateful Dead 4 months agoOne of the best thins about going to Grateful Dead shows were that people took care of each other.
I could go to a show by myself, run into 20 people I know and they would offer me a place to stay. It was reciprocal.
Greg Martens1 Commenthonored to be one of your friends..! WE SURE ARE LUCKY

The Grateful Dead 4 months agoMy first California shows were the New Years 1982 run with the Dinosaurs and Etta James. Great shows. One of the shows we roped the recording equipment up through the bathroom window of the Oakland Auditorium. Another night went in with a big pack with a daypack that had the equipment. Opened the big pack ans coordinated a had off with the day pack. Security was very good but so were we.
love we have made the connection Vinny…keep your stories coming please
2It’s been a long time. Good to reconnect.
