Dogs In A Pile made their 9:30 Club debut last night at the famed Washington D.C. venue. Rising star Natalie Brooke joined DIAP towards the end of the concert to add keytar to their cover of Son Seals’ “Funky Bitch.”

Natalie Brooke kicked off the action on Thursday in D.C. by performing a support set with her powerhouse four-piece band. The group wasn’t far from home as they’re based in the Baltimore area and will continue to open for Dogs In A Pile for the next week.

Keyboardist Jeremy Kaplan handled lead vocals on the collaborative “Funky Bitch,” which was the penultimate song of Dogs In A Pile’s closing stanza. Natalie Brooke showed off her massive skill set as she worked over the keytar for a solo before engaging in call-and-response with Kaplan, bassist Sam Lucid and guitarists Jimmy Law and Brian Murray.

“Funky Bitch” has been a staple of Phish’s live repertoire since the band’s formative days. Dogs In A Pile rolled out their version of the Son Seals-penned blues number on April 19, 2023 and waited until last night, 372 shows later, to perform “Funky Bitch” again. The Thursday night concert also featured DIAP’s first cover of the Kinks classic “Apeman” in 96 shows.
