My Morning Jacket debuted the Grateful Dead’s “Franklin’s Tower” with Karina Rykman on Tuesday during the third night of the band’s seven-show residency at The Fillmore in San Francisco. The bassist stayed aboard for “The National Anthem” and led a jam on Tool’s “46&2,” while Mikaela Davis joined the encore for two more cover debuts.

Yellow was the theme for Tuesday’s concert, with the band members dressed accordingly as part of the residency’s nightly color changes. MMJ opened with the fitting “Golden” and worked through songs from across their catalog, including “X-Mas Curtain,” “Evil Urges,” “Only Memories Remain” and “Feel You.” The set also included Jim James’ solo song “Throwback.”

Rykman emerged late in the main set for MMJ’s first take on the Grateful Dead’s “Franklin’s Tower.” The collaboration continued into Radiohead’s “The National Anthem” before Rykman steered the ensuing jam into Tool’s “46&2.” The sequence led into the ending of “Run Thru” to finish the set.

The Radiohead cover has been part of Rykman’s collaborations with Jacket since their first sit-in together in Detroit on July 2, 2024. That night, Rykman joined for “Run Thru” with “The National Anthem” tucked inside. She reunited with the band days later at Chicago’s Rose On The River festival for “Touch Me I’m Going To Scream Pt. 2,” “Louie Louie” and “One Big Holiday.”

Rykman returned for another “Run Thru”/“The National Anthem” pairing at One Big Holiday in April 2025. Their two Brooklyn collaborations that October included Metallica’s “For Whom The Bell Tolls” and Black Sabbath’s “Fairies Wear Boots.” Most recently, she joined MMJ at Hoochenanny in August for the final four songs of their set.

Davis joined Jacket to begin Tuesday’s encore with “I Will Be There When You Die.” The harpist remained for the band’s debut performance of Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work,” followed by their first “Dear God (Sincerely M.O.F.).” James, guitarist Carl Broemel and keyboardist Bo Koster traded verses on the latter, which opens the 2009 self-titled album by James’ Monsters Of Folk project.

James and Davis first collaborated at this summer’s Song Summit in Park City, Utah. Davis accompanied the MMJ frontman on harp for “Eagle When She Flies” and “Scarlet Begonias” during his solo acoustic set. Tuesday’s encore concluded with James’ “State Of The Art (A.E.I.O.U.)” and MMJ’s “Anytime.”

The guest spots followed Molly Tuttle’s appearances on opening night, when she joined MMJ for “Sugaree,” “Everyday People” and “Eagle When She Flies.” Tyler Ballgame was the guest on night two, sitting in on covers of George Harrison’s “Behind That Locked Door” and the Grateful Dead’s “Brown-Eyed Women.” The Fillmore residency continues tonight, October 7, with additional shows on October 9, 10 and 11.
