Ike Willis, one of the longest tenured members of the late Frank Zappa’s touring and recording band, has died at age 70. The news of Willis’ passing was confirmed in a statement issued by his family.

Willis died on May 16, 2026 “among loved ones” in North Las Vegas. While the cause of the singer and guitarist’s death was not disclosed, Willis told JamBase in 2022 he had recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The Willis family is deeply heartbroken to share that Ike Willis has passed away on Saturday, May 16, 2026 in North Las Vegas, Nevada. He had reached 70 grand years old, and was among loved ones. Ike was not only a great father, but a musician whose unmistakable voice, humor, and artistry left a lasting imprint on the music world. His years of collaboration with Frank Zappa made him a cherished figure within the Zappa community, where fans embraced him not only for his talent, but for his generosity, wit, and the joy he brought to every stage.

Beyond his work with Zappa, Ike continued to inspire new generations of musicians. His time mentoring young artists — including his stint teaching at School of Rock — reflected his deep belief that music should be shared, taught, and passed forward with love.

At home, he was simply Dad: full of fun, warmth, and endless laughter over old Looney Tunes cartoons. He taught us beautiful customs and how to speak in the accents and languages of some of the people from wonderful cultural places he visited and performed at, around the world, giving us a glimpse into his travels. And he loved his original, old‑school Lakers with all his heart. These are the memories that will stay with us forever.

Isaac “Ike” Willis was born on November 12, 1955 in St. Louis. Willis started playing guitar at the age of 8 and by high school had become focused on progressive rock. Ike’s life was changed upon attending a Frank Zappa concert in 1974.

“I could not believe what I was seeing and hearing. I was just amazed! From that point on, [FZ Band multi-instrumentalist Napoleon Murphy Brock] influenced everything that I did. As far as vocals and as a performer and being a frontman was concerned, especially with Zappa stuff. I learned a lot while watching him. I mean, from that first day on, you know, and it was amazing,” Willis recalled during his 2022 JamBase interview.

In 1977, Willis went to another FZ concert where he got his big break. “A couple of years later, Frank came to Washington University in St. Louis, to do a concert for the Sheik Yerbouti Tour. I was backstage because I was on the local crew and I wound up meeting and talking with him,” Ike explained. “He took me backstage to the dressing room and made me sing and play guitar. Then he invited me out to L.A. to audition for the band. So after I graduated in ‘78, he flew me out to L.A., and essentially, I never left.”

Willis was a fixture in Frank Zappa’s band from 1978 through the maestro’s final tour in 1988. Ike’s first appearance on record with Zappa was arguably his most notable as he portrayed “Joe” on the legendary 1979 triple album Joe’s Garage. Willis went on to contribute to many FZ LPs, including studio efforts Tinseltown Rebellion (1981), You Are What You Is (1981), Ship Arriving Too Late To Save A Drowning Witch (1982), The Man From Utopia (1983), Them or Us (1984) and Thing-Fish (1984), along with several live albums.

After Frank Zappa’s death in 1993, Ike Willis kept spreading the maestro’s music to the world. Willis toured with such tribute acts as Project/Object, The Muffin Men, Pojama People, Ugly Radio Rebellion and The Stinkfoot Orchestra. He also released two albums of his own music under the Ike Willis Band moniker.

“[T]he fact that I am still doing this — I am doing it for [Zappa’s fans], and for Frank. It was a privilege for me to be able to perform and to be a part of this person’s orbit. I have always thought that Frank was the most intelligent human being I have ever met,” Willis added during his 2022 JamBase interview.
