Paul McCartney returned to Saturday Night Live as the musical guest for this weekend’s season finale. The Beatles legend played his classic solo song, “Band On The Run,” and his new single, “Days We Left Behind.”
McCartney will release a new album, The Boys Of Dungeon Lane on May 29. The album, McCartney’s first solo record in five years, was produced by Andrew Watt and features “Days We Left Behind.”
The SNL performance of the track saw McCartney on acoustic guitar while backed by drummer Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers, bassist Brian Ray, guitarist Rusty Anderson, vocalist Ingrid Michaelson and keyboardist Wix Wickens. Smith also appeared with his doppelganger, host and former SNL cast member Will Ferrell during his opening monologue.
McCartney played electric bass and Ray switched to acoustic guitar for the subsequent “Band On The Run.” The song served as the title track to the 1973 Paul McCartney & Wings album and was a chart-topping hit in the United States the following year.
