The Frank Zappa Estate announced the return of the Vaulternative Records series of archival releases after a decade of dormancy. The direct-to-fan archival imprint originally launched in 2002 by Gail Zappa and stewarded by Vaultmeister Joe Travers, which was last active with Chicago ’78 in 2016, has a renewed identity and significant first release.
Zappa ’66: Vol. 1 – Live At TTG Studios is due out on May 15 via Zappa Records/UME. The set features 17 tracks, all of one of which are previously unreleased, documenting an October 1966 Mothers Of Invention studio session in Hollywood. Produced and restored by Travers, Zappa ’66: Vol. 1 – Live At TTG Studios was mastered by John Polito from the original ¼-inch analog tapes. 180g 2LP, red vinyl, CD and digital downloads are available, with all formats to include liner notes, Earl Leaf photos, Barry Feinstein film stills and Freak Out!-era ephemera.
The May release kicks off a celebration of the 60th anniversary of Freak Out!, Frank Zappa and the Mothers Of Invention’s seminal debut album and one of rock’s first concept albums. Zappa ’66: Vol. 1 – Live At TTG Studios was recorded at the same Hollywood facility Freak Out! was completed months earlier. The sessions are the only known recording of guitarist Del Casher’s short tenure in the band, as well as the earliest recorded appearances of keyboardist Don Preston and percussionist Billy Mundi. Key Mothers members vocalist Ray Collins, drummer Jimmy Carl Black and bassist Roy Estrada round out the lineup.
The TTG session was recorded for a documentary, initially dubbed Sex In The ’60s, later released as Sex In Today’s World. The Mothers presented one of their immersive “Freak Out” events for the cameras, involving musicians, dancers and L.A. music scene fixtures, including Vito Paulekas and Carl Franzoni. An live audience also witnessed the sessions, giving the resulting tracks the feel of a concert.
“I decided to take advantage of the 60th anniversary and compile the best edit I could to represent what happened that day in early October 1966 when The Mothers were hired to supposedly show the world what they were responsible for,” Travers wrote of the sessions in the liner notes. “The Mothers were unlike any other, and Frank Zappa, 25 years old and still within his first year of being a signed artist, was in the middle of making a large impact.”
Joe Travers also addressed the mission behind the relaunch of Vaulternative Records. “We’re very pleased to announce the relaunch of Vaulternative Records, which creates a direct line from The Vault to fans,” the Vaultmeister added. “Frank’s AAAFNRAA philosophy — Anything Anytime Anyplace for No Reason At All — really applies here, because the material can take so many forms. It might be an interview, a raw live recording, something Frank worked on that was never released, or a fully realized concert. The goal is to uncover and share the things we know fans will appreciate most. We’re excited to bring Vaulternative back as another way to open up The Vault and deliver more of that content to the people who want it.”
